Castle ‘Het Steen’ at Elewijt (Belgium)

Description

The origin of this castle, in traditional Flemish style, returns up to somewhere in the Middle Ages, but the exact date of building is not known.

In 1635 the world famous painter Peter Paul Rubens bought this castle and stayed there every summer until his dead in 1640.
That’s why the castle is also called ‘the Rubens castle’.
It can be admired in several landscape paintings of the Master.

The back side of this castle is also worthwhile to have a look at and can be seen here
