Castle ‘Opheylissem’ at Hélécine (Belgium)

Description

An abbey was established on this spot in 1129 by Premonstratensian monks.

Pillaged, burnt and destroyed several times, the abbey was always reconstructed, but the monks finally sold the edifice somewhere in the 18th century.

In 1762 the abbey was transformed into the present neoclassical castle flanked by Corinthian columns and crowned with a dome.
