I propose a small series dedicated to the monuments to the fallen. They are the most modest ones, found in every country of Italy, however small.
So, wandering through villages, my gaze went to the monuments to the fallen, often deteriorated by the neglect of time and men, or nowadays little visible, hidden by new construction or urban furniture, initially erected in memory of the fallen of the Great War, but after "updated" with those of the last world conflict.
This series is intended as a tribute to the many fallen in the war, mostly young peasants, workers, mountain workers, some of few who have a broader culture, but all with a big heart, who did their part to the end by fighting in distant places and unknown.
Scrolling through the gravestones, with the names hierarchically divided by rank, their number may seem small in absolute value (generally a few tens or at most a hundred or a little more), if compared to the number of inhabitants it constitutes a high percentage: in practice each family had at least one member who did not return.
I think that even a simple photograph is a gesture of respect and gratitude towards them.

Propongo una piccola serie dedicata ai monumenti ai caduti. Sono quelli più modesti, che si trovano in ogni paese d’Italia, per quanto piccolo.
Così, girovagando per paesini, il mio sguardo è andato ai monumenti ai caduti, spesso deteriorati dall’incuria del tempo e degli uomini, oppure oggi poco visibili, nascosti da nuova edilizia o arredo urbano, eretti inizialmente in memoria dei caduti della Grande Guerra, ma dopo “aggiornati” con quelli dell’ultimo conflitto mondiale.
Questa serie vuole essere un omaggio ai tanti caduti in guerra, in massima parte giovani contadini, operai, montanari, chi di poca chi di più ampia cultura, ma tutti di grande cuore, che hanno fatto la loro parte fino in fondo battendosi in luoghi lontani e sconosciuti.
Scorrendo le lapidi, con i nomi suddivisi gerarchicamente per grado, il loro numero può sembrare piccolo in valore assoluto (in genere qualche decina o al massimo cento o poco più), se rapportato al numero degli abitanti ne costituisce invece una percentuale elevata: in pratica ogni famiglia ha avuto almeno un componente che non ha fatto ritorno.
Penso che anche una semplice fotografia sia un gesto di rispetto e gratitudine nei loro confronti.
