Rosa and her daughters

Rosa and her daughters

Rosa Ibarra Epieyu is a wayuu desert indian from the Guajira peninsula on Colombia's Carribean coast. The wayuus are semi nomadic and are divided into about 18 castes. The men are goat herders and the women weave hammocks and robes like the ones in this image. You can purchase a wife for about 40 goats. They have their own law code which is applied by a "palabrero" who mediates between the castes when their is a problem. Rosa is shown here with her two mixed-race daughters in a river flowing out of the Andes and a far cry from her desert home.
