The Living Forest (158) : Striped Shield Bug

Description

The Striped Shield Bug is originally a mediterranean bug species.
However, in the eighties and nineties of the past century it suddenly moved northwards succesfully, even up to Denmark.
Recently, it has also reached the USA.

Its typical vivid red-black stripes serve to warn enemies like birds for an awfully disgusting taste when eaten.

Dutch name : Pyjamawants (ook Rood-Zwarte Streepwants genoemd)
German name : Streifenwanze
Latin name : Graphosoma lineatum
