The grass snake (also called ringed snake) is often found near water and feeds almost exclusively on amphibians like toads and frogs.
As a strong swimmer it can even catch a fish.
As with most reptiles, the grass snake hibernates in areas which are not subject to frost and therefore spends the winter underground where the temperature is relatively stable.
