The Living Forest (384) : Guelder Rose

Description

The guelder rose is, despite its name, not a rose species, but a woodland shrub with bright red autumn berries, that likes to grow on damp soils.
Also cultivated for garden use.

Birds don’t like these berries (light toxic and taste sour), so they stay for very long on the shrub and in winter they shrivel and look like dried red raisins.

Dutch name : Gelderse Roos
German name : Gemeiner Schneeball
Latin name : Viburnum opulus
