Trumpet lichens form a nice colourful accent in the winter forest.
This lichen prefers to grow in dense clusters on rotting wood of old tree trunks and is not larger than 1 cm.
Years ago when my son was a little boy, I told him these were all small green chimney pipes of the gnomes……. :-))
Just like fungi, lichens too are an interesting and fascinating aspect of nature with 25.000 species having been described and identified worldwide.
A lichen is a composite organism consisting of a fungus and a (mostly green) alga and grows as a single individual.
