The black cockatoos are one of the largest cockatoo species. Although not particularly common, they are one of South Australia's most popular and distinctive birds. They usually fly only at moderate altitudes. They have particularly large wings and beat low, very slowly and with a peculiarly heavy, flowing motion. Their loud, eerie calls carry over long distances, and the combination of sound and silhouette is unmistakable. Adult birds are between 55 and 65 cm long and weigh over 800 grams. As this species is rare and threatened with extinction, every effort should be made to place all eligible Yellow-tailed Cockatoos in captivity into a well-managed breeding programme to ensure their survival.

Die Schwarzkakadus sind eine der größten Kakadu Arten. Obwohl nicht besonders häufig, sind sie einer der beliebtesten und charakteristischsten Vögel Südaustraliens. Sie fliegen normalerweise nur in mäßiger Höhe. Sie haben besonders große Flügel und schlagen tief, sehr langsam und mit einer eigentümlich schweren, fließenden Bewegung. Ihre lauten, unheimlichen Rufe tragen über weite Distanzen, und die Kombination aus Klang und Silhouette ist unverkennbar. Erwachsene Vögel sind zwischen 55 und 65 cm lang und wiegen über 800 Gramm. Da diese Art selten ist und vom Aussterben bedroht ist, sollten alle Anstrengungen unternommen werden, um alle in Frage kommenden Gelbschwanzkakadus in Gefangenschaft in ein gut geführtes Zuchtprogramm zu setzen, um ihr Überleben zu sichern.
